Patenting Social Customs and Human Nature?
Recents patents granted to Priceline, Amazon, Dell and others for techniques that have been used since (and probably before!) the dawn of human civilization are absurd, an insult to all humans, and, until invalidated, might severely curtail internet commerce. Obviously, humans have been using normal price negotiating techniques forever. Imagine a cave man wanting his neighbors' cave. He would offer a price - perhaps a supply of meat - and then, if the price wasn't high enough to get him to give up his cave, the neighbor might respond by setting, or naming, his price. Kind of like the recently patented Priceline patent. In human terms, the storage medium is the human brain. The neighbor might have been looking to upgrade to a better cave, and wanted to see how much he could get for the one he was quitting. Thus he could have put it up "for auction", and allow his neighbors to bid on it. A neighbor might have announced that he wanted a new cave that fit such and such a description, and he would be willing to pay so much for it.

There's nothing original about "one click buying", it's just fast service applied to a new medium. There's nothing patentable about Dell's patented "build to order" business model. How do you think some manufacturers, or home workers in "cottage industries" have always made their products through the ages? After the customer's order, of course! Think about a customized product. How about a custom home or car? A screenplay that wasn't written for spec? It is absurd that anyone could receive a patent for such a common sense, un-original "idea".

All of these patents being given out shouldn't be. The patents are already in place for the hardware, technology, and software that enable the processes. A "business model" doesn't deserve a patent, especially when it's just social customs, business customs, communication or human nature being applied across a new medium. Patent Office take note and stop messing with our lives!
